Ole Kassow on a rickshaw with two nursing home residents, "And so I rented the rickshaw again and I started doing regular bike rides with the residents in my spare time. It gave THEM a new-found mobility and it gave ME an amazing new insight into my city and lots of very unlikely friendships. I felt like an explorer in uncharted territory."
Cycling Without Age was founded in Denmark in 2012 by Ole Kassow. Being inspired by his daily bike ride he rented one rickshaw and started to offer free bike rides to residents at the local nursing home. Soon the Municipality of Copenhagen got interested and bought five rickshaws. This was the starting point.
Today the program is all over Denmark and is spreading to Norway, the Netherlands, Schwitzerland and Sweden. In cities and towns around the world dedicated persons and organizations are working to bring Cycling Without Age to their city or town and Bike West Hartford, Inc. is one of them.
Lene Bruun is Danish and is currently a resident in West Hartford together with her husband and three children. As a volunteer in West Hartford Bicycling Advisory Committee she thought, ”Why not bring Cycling Without Age to West Hartford?"
She presented the idea to the committee and received support to try to get the program started.
As she says: ”We have great nature and beautiful parks and I would love for the senior citizens to experience this and to get wind in their hair”.
